What is Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Technology?
P2P is a new generation of computing technology that leverages the ubiquity of Internet connected devices and established Internet protocols and standards (the "rules" that determine how computers communicate online), to allow different kinds of desktop computing systems (Windows PC, Macintosh, UNIX & LINUX) to effectively work and communicate together. P2P technology allows peers in a network to share and leverage computing resources such as: processing power, storage, network bandwidth, and applications.
This new interoperable computing infrastructure provides knowledge workers with time saving and productivity enhancing tools that utilize real-time collaborative working environments, more efficent file storage, and cheap high-performance computing power.
What is GRID Technology?
In essence GRID technology aims to make computing (software and hardware) as pervasive, standardized, and easy to use as the present Electrical Grid. The various GRID computing platforms (Globus, Legion, Sun Grid Engine) provide standardized protocols and standards for creating a computing infrastructure that allows highly complex and data intensive computing to occur seamlessly within or between an organization's technology infrastructures. Besides being prevasive and standardized, GRID technology allows computing infrastructures to be dynamically created with computing concepts like load-balancing, resource self-awareness and advertising.
